How to Determine Percentage of Weight Loss

If you are starting or finishing a weight loss program, you may be curious what percentage of weight you have lost. The scale will tell you only the exact number of pounds you've lost. In order to determine the percentage of weight you have lost, you need to do some simple math.

Step 1

Weigh yourself on a scale. Do so first thing in the morning after using the restroom to obtain your most accurate weight.

Step 2

Subtract your current weight from your starting weight, using a calculator. This will tell you the number of pounds you have lost. If you weighed 180 lbs. before starting a weight loss plan and you now weigh 150 lbs., your math would look like this: 180 - 150 = 30.

Step 3

Divide the number of pounds you have lost by your starting weight. From the example above: 30 / 180 = 0.1667. Multiply this number by 100 to obtain the percentage: 0.1667 x 10 = 16.67. In this example, your weight loss percentage is about 17 percent.

Step 4

Use an online calculator, such as the one at ShapeFit.com, for an instant calculation of your approximate percentage of weight loss.
