CO Q10 Heart Benefits

Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is produced in the body and helps the functioning of cells. But levels of the compound may decrease as people age. It has also been found that CoQ10 levels decrease with certain diseases. CoQ10 is also found in foods such as liver, beef, soybean oil, sardines, mackerel and peanuts. But many studies have focused on CoQ10 supplements, according to the American Heart Association, which states further evaluation for its effectiveness needs to be done.

Heart Disease

CoQ10 may improve energy in cells, inhibit the formation of blood clots and act as an antioxidant to fight heart disease. Researchers found that people who received daily CoQ10 supplements within three days of a heart attack were less likely to have a subsequent heart attack or chest pain than other patients, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). The patients were also less likely to die of heart disease if they received the supplements.

Angina

Preliminary research indicates that CoQ10 may reduce angina or chest pain from clogged heart arteries, but better studies are needed to confirm these results, the Mayo Clinic says.

Heart Failure

CoQ10 may help people with congestive heart failure by reducing the swelling in the legs and improve lung function to provide better breathing for patients. The heart is not able to pump blood properly following congestive heart failure, so blood may pool throughout the body, including the legs and lungs.

Blood Pressure and Cholesterol

High levels of blood pressure and cholesterol may interfere with heart function, even resulting in heart disease. Low levels of CoQ10 have been found in people with high blood pressure. CoQ10 may lower blood pressure when taken for several weeks, according to the UMMC. CoQ10 supplements may correct the deficiencies of CoQ10 in the body caused by cholesterol-lowering drugs, the UMMC says. Cholesterol can clog the arteries, leading to heart attack and stroke.

Damage from Chemotherapy Drugs

Certain chemotherapy drugs for cancer patients may cause heart damage. But CoQ10 may prevent the damage, a major concern when using these drugs to help patients, the UMMC says.

Heart Surgery

CoQ10 may help prior to heart surgery, such as bypass operations or heart transplants,. It may strengthen heart function and lower the possibility of irregular heartbeat, which may occur following heart surgery, the Mayo Clinic says, but adds that further studies are necessary.

Heart Conditions

Children with mitral valve prolapse may benefit greatly from the use of CoQ10. The disorder occurs when the valve between the left upper chamber and lower chamber does not close properly. It can cause irregular heartbeat, dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue and chest pain. Use of CoQ10 is undergoing more research in this area, according to the Mayo Clinic. CoQ10 may also help patients with cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle, but better research is needed.
