Finger foods and toddlers go together like bees and honey. Toddlers, usually considered between the ages of 12 and 36 months, love fun finger foods, foods that can be dipped, and interesting food shapes and colors. Small children can sometimes be picky eaters, so care should be taken when planning the menu, ensuring that there is something for all miniature taste buds to enjoy. To ensure your next little ones party is a hit, try combining foods that look fun, taste good, are properly portioned, safe, and have some nutritional value.
Fruit and Dip
Toddlers will love a variety of sliced fruit chunks, with a yummy, creamy dip on the side. For the fruit, try melons, such as cantaloupe and honeydew. Berries are usually a little kid favorite, especially strawberries. Slice the fruit in manageable sized pieces and arrange on a platter. For the dip, mix 8 oz. of strawberry cream cheese with 8 oz. of whipped topping. The easiest way to blend the dip is with a hand mixture, to ensure that all chunks have been beat out. Keep the dip chilled until ready to serve.
Mini Bagel Pizza Smiley Faces
These little happy bagels will be devoured by toddlers, and will keep a little tummy full for the party. Purchase a bag of mini sliced bagels. Whole grain is a healthier choice. Spread each open bagel with your favorite jarred spaghetti sauce, and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Use small green pepper slices for the smile, and black olive slices for the eyes and nose. Place on a baking sheet, and bake at 325 degrees F for around 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Vanilla Wafer Sandwiches
Although this recipe is extremely simple, it is delicious. Simply take two vanilla wafer cookies, and sandwich banana slices between each, making a little sandwich. You could spread the wafers with some peanut butter for older toddlers, or even chocolate spread, but the simple wafer and banana combo is probably better. Even the pickiest eater will grab some of these.
