How to Create Healthy Families

In a society where life is hectic and often stressful, it's easy to feel rushed and not have enough time or energy to devote to making healthy lifestyle choices. The benefits of healthy food and getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day are many, but they don't tell the whole story. You should also cultivate a happy, loving environment and help children develop a positive mental attitude to enjoy good health today, tomorrow and in the future.

Step 1

Make family a top priority. Take time for togetherness, no matter how hectic your schedule may be. Start by shrinking your to-do list and using the extra time to enjoy simple pleasures such as staying home on a rainy day and playing Monopoly or going for a drive on a sunny day. Make some popcorn and curl up on the couch for a movie night. Take your kids shopping for something that's really important to them. They will be thrilled. Don't allow work or other activities to interfere with family time. This is essential for the sake of your family's physical and emotional well-being.

Step 2

Put healthy food on your table. According to the National Institutes of Health, healthy eating affects everyone in your family in many positive ways, including reviving happiness and a lower risk of many illnesses when you don't maintain a healthy weight. Include more fruits and vegetables in your meal planning. Aim for two servings a week of salmon or canned light tuna. Delicious dinners come from a can of tuna. Add some to macaroni and cheese. Choose fewer foods with a lot of fat and sugar. Remember to stock up on healthy snacks such as peanut butter and low-fat yogurts. Clear your cupboards of high-calorie snacks such as chips, cookies, sugary cereals and sweets.

Step 3

Involve your kids in planning meals, cooking and grocery shopping. Children enjoy helping and they can learn to make healthy food choices. Also, have family meals at least three nights a week. This gives everyone an opportunity to relax and talk about each other's days. After meals, instead of watching TV, take a walk together. It's important to be physically active every day. Make it a part of your family's life. Although it may not be easy, try to go about your days at a more leisurely pace. Keep in mind that children are often happy to just simply relax and be with you. Create an atmosphere of openness for communicating and also give your children some time alone to think, unleash creativity and develop imagination.

Step 4

Focus on the positive. Your family will enjoy a lifetime of good health. It's important that you be a good role model. Thinking good, positive thoughts, for example, improves the way you feel about yourself, and what affects your mind also affects your body. Share these positive thoughts and feelings with your family. Talk about everything positive that happened each day. If you noticed something good that you had observed your child doing, mention it. Fill your home with unconditional love. Find ways to show love, such as putting a little note in a lunch box. Give your family compliments, praise their efforts, be encouraging and be kind. Never speak disrespectfully, put anyone down or act in a rude way.

Step 5

Keep discussions from getting heated. It's natural for arguments to erupt in any family, but it's important to express your feelings. When you're upset or something's bothering you, speak up. First, be sure to tell your family member how much you love and care about them before going into the issue at hand. With some simple kind words, you can turn the conflict into a discussion rather than argument and keep it from getting heated. Sometimes apologizing is difficult, but it's best to be forgiving and focus on solutions instead of holding grudges. Be willing to compromise until you resolve whatever you're discussing. As a result, you'll avoid conflict in day-to-day interactions.
