Hot oil treatment, either store bought or homemade, is a good method for conditioning dry or damaged hair. Hot oil is generally used once a week to give your hair the look of everyday conditioning. It will restore the moisture, shine and body in your hair, making it appear healthier. Constant blow drying, coloring or having your hair curled or straightened may cause long-term damage, according to the Daily Glow, so using a hot oil treatment once a week will maintainingg strong, healthy, shiny hair.
Step 1
Warm the hot oil according to the manufacturer's instructions. While warming the oil, wet your hair.
Step 2
Apply the hot oil to your hair and massage it in carefully. A variety of oils may be used, depending on hair type and your preference, explains the Long Healthy Hair Advisor website. Be sure to rub the oil into every strand of hair so you have complete coverage. Using a large tooth comb will help with applying the oil to all strands of hair, says the Daily Glow website. Pull the comb through repeatedly to ensure complete coverage.
Step 3
Wrap your hair in either a shower cap or plastic wrap and cover with a towel freshly warmed from the dryer. Let the treatment set for the amount of time mentioned in the instructions, which is usually anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes.
Step 4
Rinse out your hair, removing as much of the oil as possible, and then wash your hair as you would normally, using a mild shampoo. Towel dry gently.
Tips and Warnings
- It is good to test the warmed oil on the inside of your wrist before applying it to your hair. If it is too hot for your wrist, it will be too hot for your scalp, so let it cool down before using. Hot oil treatments can help with dry scalp problems too. The oils will help moisturize the scalp and help with the dryness, but will need to be used frequently to help with dandruff.
- All hot oil treatments need to be used with caution. The oil can cause surface or first degree burns.
