One form of identity theft involves the theft of your credit card information. Using your account number or one of your cards, the criminal can rack up a large amount of charges. If you notice any fraudulent charges on your credit card statement, it is important to contact the credit card company to get your money back. If you do nothing, you are responsible for the charges. It is also important to contact the credit reporting agencies so that a fraud alert can be placed on your file.
Step 1
Review your past credit card statements. Statements for most major credit card companies are now available through their online websites. Print out the past statements with fraudulent charges and highlight the items in question.
Step 2
Call the customer service line of your credit card company. The number will be on the back of your card. Let the representative know that you suspect you have been a victim of identity theft and wish to dispute certain charges.
Step 3
Provide your account details to the customer service representative. Give the dates, business names and charge amounts for the items that you are disputing. Answer any questions that the company may have.
Step 4
Wait for a fraud package to arrive in the mail. In the package, there will be a listing of the charges you are disputing and an affidavit contending that these charges were made without your approval or knowledge. Sign the forms and return them to the credit card company. Make a copy of all paperwork for your personal files.
Step 5
Allow a couple of weeks for your credit card company to make a decision about the fraudulent charges. If the investigation proves that you did not make the charges, the money will be credited to your account. Any interest and fees will be refunded as well.
Tips and Warnings
- Remember to contact the local police about fraudulent charges. They can file a police report that you can keep for your records.
