Symptoms of Scoliosis in the Upper Back

If you or your child has been diagnosed with scoliosis, it means that the upper part of your spine is curving sideways. Your spine may resemble a "C" or "S" shape. In some cases, there is no known cause. However, this condition can occur as a result of disease and genetic conditions. It can be present at birth or developed during childhood or adulthood. When your spine curves abnormally, it may place pressure on surrounding tissues, muscles and nerves, leading to symptoms. The good news is that there are treatment options for this condition to help you manage your symptoms.

Changes in Appearance

Scoliosis will create a change in your posture which can throw you off balance. This may make it difficult to walk and stand. If the bones in your spine have rotated, your waist or shoulders may appear uneven. One rib or shoulder may look higher then the other. Also be on the lookout for uneven hips, one shoulder blade that sticks out further then the other, ribs that stick out further on one side, or a tendency to lean to one side. Your doctor can examine your spine, and use X-rays to help confirm a diagnosis.

Pain

The curvature associated with scoliosis can cause back, neck and shoulder pain. If there is pressure on surrounding nerves, the pain can radiate down your legs. Fatigue can set in, as you work to maintain posture and balance. You may have trouble doing everyday activities because your range of motion is limited.

Severe Symptoms

If your curvature is severe, it can compress your lungs and make breathing difficult. You will also be at an increased risk of lung infections and pneumonia. This change in the structure of your spine, may cause your ribcage to press against your heart so it can not pump correctly. Having scoliosis may make you more susceptible to developing arthritis in your spine.
