Although signs and symptoms vary between women, there are some very early signs that a woman may experience prior to missing a menstrual period. However, some women do not begin to feel symptoms until after their period is late. If you experience any of the following symptoms and have not gotten your period, it is time to pick up a home pregnancy test. Some newer tests may detect pregnancy as early as five days prior to the day your period is due.
Cramping and Implantation Bleeding
You may experience cramping with or without mild spotting about two weeks after conception. The cramping is because of the embryo implanting into the uterine wall as well as the stretching of the uterus to accommodate its new visitor. At this time, some women experience mild spotting, which is thought to occur as the new embryo attaches itself to the uterine wall.
Nausea
Some women begin to feel nausea as early as one to two weeks after conception. This happens because of the rapid rise of pregnancy hormones. Nausea is usually worse on an empty stomach, so eating smaller meals more frequently may help alleviate nausea. Avoiding spicy foods and sticking to a bland diet are advised.
Breast Tenderness
Breast tenderness is an early sign of pregnancy. This may be equal to or worse than the breast tenderness that you feel around the time of your period. You may also notice a difference in the appearance of your breasts. The areola may appear darker and larger in size. Some women may be able to visualize the appearance of blue veins on their breast tissue. Wearing a well-fitted, supportive bra is necessary to minimize discomfort.
Urinary Frequency
Some women may begin to experience urinary frequency early in pregnancy. This happens as the uterus begins to expand and places additional pressure on the bladder.
Fatigue and Headache
Fatigue and headache may be symptoms of early pregnancy. You may just feel a bit more tired than usual. The headache is because of the rise in pregnancy hormones. Although taking regular-strength acetaminophen is considered safe in the first trimester, you should use medication only when necessary. A nap or a warm bath may be enough to relieve your headache.
Missed Period
A missed period is a more obvious sign of pregnancy. Hormones, stress and changes in body weight are known to cause menstrual irregularity. However, if you are trying to conceive and you have missed your period, it is time to take a test.
