There are acne treatment products on the market that are helpful in drying up and eliminating acne breakouts, but many of these products contain harsh chemical ingredients that can cause irritation on the skin. Fortunately, there are a few acne treatment products that are natural, yet still effective in getting rid of acne blemishes.

Tea Tree Oil

According to the Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, tea tree oil is just as effective in clearing up acne breakouts as benzoyl peroxide cream, but it does not cause the unwanted side effects that benzoyl peroxide does, such as itching, burning or peeling on the skin. Tea tree oil is available at most health food stores or you can purchase it through an online merchant. To use tea tree oil on the skin to treat acne, dilute it in a 95/5 percent water solution. To do this, fill an empty bottle with 8 oz. of water for every five drops of tea tree oil, then apply it to the skin up to three times per day.

Calamine Lotion

Calamine lotion is a mineral-based natural lotion that is typically used to dry up blisters caused by a viral skin rash or to relieve the itching caused by a poisonous plant, such as poison ivy or poison oak. Many people do not realize that calamine lotion is helpful in treating acne pustules and cysts. Since calamine lotion does not irritate the skin, you can use it as an effective overnight spot treatment. Apply calamine lotion without dilution using a cotton swab, allow it to dry, then rinse it off after one hour. You can keep calamine lotion on the skin for up to 8 hours before rinsing it off.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is an acid substance that is high in vitamin C, which is helpful in increasing skin cell turnover. Since the skin is naturally acidic, applying an acidic toner will help the skin maintain the proper pH, enabling the oil production to become more balanced and normalized. Many people use other acidic substances to balance the oils and acid on the skin, such as apple cider vinegar, but often find that the fragrance is too strong to use every day and prefer using lemon juice, which has a pleasing smell. The vitamin C in lemon juice improves the ability of the skin to slough off dead skin cells, which keeps the pores clearer, and increases the development of new skin cells at the same time. You can use undiluted lemon juice on the skin up to three times per day.
