Warnings Signs of Depression

Depression is a serious psychological disorder and is more than simply feeling sad. The Mayo Clinic reports that depression is one of the most common chronic health problems in the world. While the symptoms of depression do vary from person to person, understanding the warning signs can help someone suffering from depression to get prompt treatment.

Persistent Sadness

The psychological condition of depression causes a person to have a lower mood than normal. However, this mood change is not the same as simply feeling down. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) describes this as "persistent sadness," or a low mood that lasts longer than expected for the situation. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) adds that a person suffering from depression may also feel hopeless, worthless and guilt-ridden. Sadness on its own is not enough to diagnose depression: several symptoms of the condition must be present for at least two weeks before a diagnosis can be made. However, unusual sadness may be a potential warning sign for depression that is developing.

Anxiety and Irritability

Another potential warning sign of depression is unusual anxiety. According to NIMH, a person with depression may seem restless or even irritable. The Mayo Clinic reports that a person with depression may become annoyed more easily than normal. This can lead to agitation or episodes of panic.

Sleep Disturbances

A person with depression often has changes to her usual sleeping cycle. Therefore, unusual sleeping patterns may be an early warning sign of depression. A depressed person may have episodes of insomnia, where she is unable to sleep. Some people even sleep more than normal, which Medline Plus describes as "excessive sleeping." The depressed person may also seem constantly fatigued, or lacking in their usual energy.

Social Changes

Depression often interferes with a person's daily activities, including social interaction. Relationships often suffer can be a warning sign of depression. According to the NIH, people who are depressed tend to lose interest in the activities they used to engage in, including sex. Problems with school or work may also develop. The Mayo Clinic reports that in some cases, a person may become more and more socially isolated.

Unusual Appetite

Another potential warning sign of depression is an unusual change in appetite. Some people lose interest in food, while others do the opposite and overeat. The Mayo Clinic reports that weight loss and weight gain are both common symptoms of depression.

Serious Warning Signs

While the typical symptoms of depression do require medical attention, there are some serious warning signs that should be addressed immediately. A person with depression (even one who is receiving treatment) may find themselves in what the NIMH refers to as a "crisis situation." Some of the warning signs of crisis include drug and alcohol abuse, self harm and thoughts of suicide. If you or someone you know has these warning signs of depression, seek medical attention immediately.
