The smell of lavender is a soothing scent that can promote happiness and tranquility. The essential oils of the lavender plant can be extracted or purchased and used for many different purposes, for everything from stress reduction, to healing, to crafts, and even for household cleaning.

Household Uses

According to the gardening and household tip website GardenGuides.com, lavender essential oil has many household uses. They recommend adding a drop of lavender essential oil to the water used when cleaning out the fridge and microwave so that you are welcomed each time you use them with a soothing scent rather than the odor of rancid food. You can also add a few drops of lavender essential oil to some terry cloth and put it in the dryer with your towels and sheets so that they come out smelling fresh and clean.

Relaxation

GardenGuides.com recommends making your own massage oil by adding a few drops of lavender essential oil to some sweet almond or vegetable oil. If you work in a stressful or fast-paced environment, spray some diluted lavender oil in the air, or place some lavender essential oil in a diffuser to make the environment more calming.

Sleep

If you have a hard time falling asleep, using lavender essential oil is a nice alternative to prescription sleep medications. GardenGuides.com recommends placing a few drops of lavender essential oil on your pillow each night so that when you lay your head to rest, the scent will relax you to sleep. Body Ecology, a natural health website, says that taking a bath with some lavender essential oil in the water can also make you sleepy before bedtime.

Expelling Bugs

The scent of lavender repels flies and moths. GardenGuides.com recommends sprinkling a bit of lavender essential oil on the outside of the window frames in your house so that flies and moths don't come inside your home. You can also use lavender essential oil in an oil diffuser in your home, especially in the summer, so that flies leave your family alone.

Making Gifts

Body Ecology says that lavender essential oil is an ingredient that can be used to make numerous different types of gifts. You can make homemade potpourri to give out at Christmastime, or scent some satchels with lavender essential oil so that your family can keep them in their clothes drawers. Homemade soaps and candles can also be made with lavender essential oil.
