How to Select a Yoga Mat

Selecting the correct yoga mat is an essential step in beginning a yoga routine. A good yoga mat will offer a layer of support and comfort that will help you continue your yoga routine on a long-term basis. The best yoga mats will have a non-slip surface whether wet or dry, will be lightweight for easy carrying and will stand up to repeated washing and use.

Step 1

Perform a pinch test on each of the available yoga mats at the sports supply store. This will help you find a mat with the amount of thickness you enjoy. You want a mat that has thickness but is also stiff enough that your feet does not sink through to the hard floor beneath.

Step 2

Rub your hand across the surface of the yoga mat to determine whether there is enough grip to keep you from slipping during your yoga routine. While you want to avoid slips, choose a mat that's not so sticky that you won't be able to easily move from pose to pose.

Step 3

Moisten your hand lightly to check the grip each yoga mat has when you are sweating. This is important as you do not want to slip due to sweat. The mat should have about the same amount of grip as it did when dry.

Step 4

Check the weight of the yoga mats to find one that is lightweight for easy transporting. Many yoga mats also come with straps to wrap the mat and transport it easily.

Tips and Warnings

  • You may need to check more than one sports store to find the perfect mat for you.
  • If your yoga mat starts to break down, it is time to replace it. The inner stuffing of a yoga mat can harbor germs.
