How to Stop My Face From Peeling

Sunburn is painful, but even worse for some people is the peeling skin that can occur several days later. Skin that becomes too burnt and/or dry from extensive exposure to the sun can come off in thin, white flakes. This can also occur when skin is dry, dead, or not properly scrubbed and washed to get rid of dead skin cells. There are several things you can do to stop peeling skin, even if you accelerate the process to get through with it faster and save yourself the embarrassment.

Step 1

Avoid the sun, or wear sunscreen if you have to be outside. Sunlight will only further dry out your skin and accelerate the peeling. Use a sunscreen with an SPF 30 or greater, and wear a hat.

Step 2

Apply a moisturizing lotion with aloe vera, or use an aloe vera supplemental gel or cream. Aloe vera helps soothe skin and keep it moist and healthy. If using a supplemental gel or cream, refrigerate it prior to use and apply twice daily to your face.

Step 3

Drink at least 8 glasses (64 oz.) of water each day. Water is key to keeping your face from peeling because it hydrates your skin, staving off dry flakes.

Step 4

Use an exfoliating scrub to get rid of dead skin cells. Exfoliating scrubs have little sand-like particles that rub your skin and get rid of dead cells. These cells will eventually peel off your face in white flakes if they aren't scrubbed away beforehand. Exfoliating will also get rid of peeling skin resulting from sunburn.

Tips and Warnings

  • Consider applying olive oil to your skin once each day to help hydrate your skin.
