Zyprexa is an anti-psychotic used in the treatment of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Prescribed for both children over the age of 10 and adults, it can also be used in combination with another anti-psychotic called fluoxetine. Before taking this medication, patients need to be aware of its possible side effects.
Most Common Side Effects
Zyprexa's most common side effects are also the side effects that pose the smallest risk to a patient's health. These side effects usually subside as the body adjusts to the medication. Drowsiness, increased appetite and weakness are all considered normal, as is fatigue. Patients may also experience constipation and heartburn, or suffer from dry mouth and dizziness. If by chance these side effects become bothersome or worsen, the doctor may need to be notified and the dosage adjusted.
Insomnia
While difficulty falling asleep is the most common, patients may find themselves waking up earlier than usual as well. They may also wake up frequently throughout the night. In some cases, patients may sleep through the night, but wake up feeling like they didn't sleep at all. There may be ways to manage this side effect if it is brought to the attention of the doctor.
Weight Gain
Dr. Arthur Schoenstadt of eMedTV states that more than 22 percent of adults experience a weight gain while taking Zyprexa. A weight gain of 20 lbs. or less is considered typical, and can be managed by eating more fruits and vegetables, lowering the amount of saturated fats in the diet and exercising for at least 30 minutes a day. A large and rapid weight gain while taking Zyprexa can have serious health repercussions. It can increase the risk of diabetes, and should be reported to the patient's doctor promptly.
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS)
A neurological disorder, NMS is caused by an adverse reaction to anti-psychotic drugs such as Zyprexa. Signs of this condition include high fever, confusion, stiff muscles and profuse sweating. Patients may also experience an irregular pulse or fluctuations in blood pressure, along with irregular heart rhythms. Should these symptoms be experienced, it is imperative to contact the doctor immediately.
