Maintaining white teeth is difficult due to all the foods and beverages people consume that leave behind discoloration. Increasing straw use, brushing or rinsing the mouth out after every meal or drink can help reduce teeth staining. Some of the more likely culprits of teeth staining include cigarettes, coffee, tea and wine. Home remedies can be used to whiten the teeth for a considerably lower cost.
Step 1
Pour a small amount of baking soda into a small dish. It is possible to use the soda straight from the box but it can contaminate the baking soda or increase moisture in the box, leading to the soda sticking together or drying out.
Step 2
Wet your toothbrush with a small amount of water.
Step 3
Dip the toothbrush into the baking soda. Brush your teeth as you normally would. Concentrate on areas of staining or discoloration.
Step 4
Rinse your mouth with water or brush with regular toothpaste to remove the residue and taste. Repeat this process as needed to maintain and further whiten your smile.
Step 5
Work on stubborn stains by wetting your toothbrush with hydrogen peroxide (1 to 3 percent solution) before dipping it into the baking soda. Hydrogen peroxide is a form of bleach. It should not be used regularly but it can be used to remove stubborn stains.
