Types of Cellulite

Skinny and overweight people alike are prone to suffer from the appearance of cellulite. This fat that exists in pockets just below the skin's surface most often shows up around the buttocks, hips and thighs, and is extremely difficult to diminish. Four stages, or types, of cellulite are identified on the Nurnberger-Muller scale, which was developed by doctors to distinguish between the varying levels of cellulite a person can have.

Stage 0

In this type of cellulite, a person cannot see cellulite dimples, also called the "orange peel effect," when standing or lying down. When he performs the pinch test, he'll see folds and creases but not dimples. To do the pinch test, a person pinches the skin on his buttocks, thigh or belly with his thumb and index finger, explains Marie Watkins in her book, "Banishing Cellulite Once and For All."

Stage 1

In the second type of cellulite, which is actually deemed Stage 1, a person still cannot see cellulite dimples when standing or lying down. However, when she performs a pinch test, dimples are visible, according to Dr. Delia Simu in "The Estrogen-Cellulite Connection."

Stage 2

With Stage 2 cellulite, dimples can be seen on the buttocks, thighs or belly when standing but not when lying down.

Stage 3

In the final type of cellulite, Stage 3, dimples are visible either when standing or lying down.

Painful Cellulite

Painful cellulite may occur for some people at Stage 3. A person with painful cellulite may have raised areas as well as nodules. "Painful" cellulite can mean either a dull ache in the areas of cellulite, or cellulite that is tender when touched.
