Thinning hair affects about one third of men before their forty-fifth birthday and more than one third of women. In fact, researchers at GlaxoSmithKline, McGill University and King's College London have found that as many as one in seven people actually have two genes that predispose them for baldness. Identifying the causes of baldness will eventually lead to more effective treatments, but right now the choices are limited to a few topical preparations and hair restoration procedures. While those treatments work to stop or even reverse the shedding, hair care and the proper use of hair care products will give your hair follicles the best chance at a normal life span.
Volumizing Shampoos
There are many of these products on the market. While they don't add hair to your head, they will help to thicken each hair shaft. According to dermatologist Zoe Draelos, associate professor of dermatology at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, as women age their hair shafts shrink making the hair appear thinner. Bulk those hair shafts up by choosing products that contain rice and wheat proteins.
Flexible Hairsprays
Harsh hairsprays can break hair and dry out the scalp, both of which contribute to hair thinning. Since thinning hair often needs hairspray to keep it in place and help to cover areas that are particularly thinned, stick with flexible hairsprays. In an article in "Good Housekeeping," Dr. Draelos reports that the less sticky more flexible sprays are much less likely to damage the hair. Look for "flexible" on the packaging.
Scalp-moisturizing Shampoos
A very clean and nourished scalp can help stop mild hair loss. The Nioxin family of shampoos, conditioners and treatments offer help for thinning hair by addressing the health of the scalp and not the hair. The formulations make sure that the scalp is as clean and moisturized as possible, allowing the hair follicles to breathe and be nourished by the body's blood supply.
