It's every parent's wish: a baby who sleeps longer and deeper so Mom and Dad can get some rest, too. Although it may seem impossible to get a young baby to sleep through the night, you can try some techniques to improve sleep quality and to increase the time your baby stays asleep. Keep in mind that sleeping patterns change as the baby ages and that a baby who refuses to sleep night after night may be suffering from a health problem that's keeping him awake. Always consult a doctor if you're in doubt.
Step 1
Try several rooms and areas until you find one that best suits the baby. Some babies prefer quiet rooms, while others will sleep better with white noise, such as a fan running in the background. Although some babies can sleep in their own rooms from the time they're born, others will need reassurance throughout the night and would do better sleeping in bassinets next to their parents' beds.
Step 2
Maintain a steady feeding routine during the day. If your baby skips meals or refuses to eat much during the day because she's overstimulated or confused by changing meal times, she might make up for it by feeding more frequently throughout the night. If the baby wakes up, try to feed her a full serving rather than just letting her snack, which can lead to her waking up again soon for more food.
Step 3
Keep the room dark and at a comfortable temperature. Light is stimulating and can lead to shorter sleep periods. Thick curtains or opaque shades help avoid sleep disruptions, especially once the sun comes up. A constant temperature of around 70 degrees F is usually comfortable enough. If the room is too dry, add a warm-mist vaporizer to keep the air's moisture level constant.
Step 4
Establish a sleeping routine so the baby can start associating certain actions with sleeping time. For example, sing the same songs at bedtime, or turn on a CD or night light. A warm bath just before bedtime may also help. Employ a series of actions instead of just one. That way, if you are tired or don't feel like rocking the baby one night, you can use a different method that will still signify bedtime to the baby.
Step 5
Eliminate medical causes for short sleep periods. These issues can include anything from colic pain to teething discomfort to ear infections. Your doctor will help you choose the best remedy to comfort the baby and to ensure that he feels comfortable throughout the day and night.
