Cosmetic Procedures for Acne

When you first develop breakouts, you'll likely rely on topical treatments to cure the acne. Over-the-counter acne medications typically contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to combat the pimples. However, if you suffer from chronic breakouts, you may require cosmetic procedures to keep your skin clear.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is used to target the bacteria that cause the acne breakouts on the surface of the skin. Also, lasers can damage the sebaceous glands and produce less oil on the surface of the skin. The blue light laser is a low intensity laser used to target acne causing bacterium. Pulsed light and heat energy lasers target both the bacterium and the sebaceous glands. Diode lasers are used to destroy the sebaceous glands. It is recommended to speak to a dermatologist about the potential side effects of laser therapy, like redness, irritation, dryness and swelling.

Microdermabrasion

To exfoliate and unclog the pores, microdermabrasion can be performed by a dermatologist or an esthetician at a spa facility. A hand-held wand glides across the surface of the skin while blowing out crystals to remove the dead skin cells. Potential side effects include irritation, redness and swelling.

Chemical Peel

During a chemical peel, acne is treated through the application of an acidic substance to the skin. Some examples used during a chemical peel are glycolic acid and salicylic acid. This procedure can remove dead skin cells, unclog pores and generate new skin growth. Potential side effects are scaling, blistering, abnormal skin tone, irritation and redness.

Drainage

If acne cysts become large, they may need to be drained and then surgically removed by a doctor. Drainage and removal can reduce the chance of scarring. A surgical lancet is used to cut the acne away from the skin. It is not advised that the patient attempt to drain the acne cysts on his own. Single or multiple cysts may be removed at a time and possible side effects include scarring and irritation.
