Pemphigus actually is the name for several skin disorders that are rare. These disorders can be the cause of blisters that form in the skin or within the mucus membranes. They can effect you on your genitals or in your mouth at nearly any age. Pemphigus most commonly manifests during middle age or thereafter. Generally, pemphigus is chronic, but can be controlled with treatments or medicines that typically may be used in the treatment of burns that are severe.
Pemphigus Foliaceus
This form of the pemphigus disease is the type that typically does not occur in the mucus membranes. It usually forms blisters that start on your scalp or on the face. These may spread over time to include your back and the chest area. These types of symptoms, the Mayo Clinic reports, typically do not cause you pain but can cause you to itch. They generally are encrusted.
Pemphigus Vulgaris
Pemphigus vulgaris, like all versions of the condition, is a disease of the human immune system. According to the National Institute of Health, researchers and doctors are not certain why the disease manifests in some people. It is not contagious, but pemphigus vulgaris is the most common form of the disease. The symptoms include blisters first inside your mouth and then later on various parts of the skin. These blisters also can affect the vaginal mucus membranes. The Mayo Clinic states they can be painful, but typically do not cause itching.
Paraneoplastic Pemphigus
The most serious form of the disease is paraneoplastic pemphigus and it can occur because of a related malignancy, the Mayo Clinic reports. Symptoms include lesions on your skin, sores in the mouth or lips and blisters inside the esophagus. Another symptom, and the most serious, is lesions that occur inside the lungs. This can cause progressive lung disease. Dyspnea causes you to breathe with difficulty. All of the associated sores and blisters of paraneoplastic pemphigus can be quite painful.
