Oxybutynin is an antispasmodic drug prescribed to treat overactive bladder conditions. These may include incontinence, increased or urgent urination, spina bifida (a disability which can affect the bladder muscles), or other conditions that affect the bladder. The medication works by relaxing the muscles in the bladder, thereby reducing muscle spasms in the bladder and urinary tract.
Overheating/Heatstroke
A common side effect of oxybutynin, according to MayoClinic.com, may be a decrease in sweating. This can lead to an increase in body temperature and heat stroke. Care should be taken not to become overheated especially during exercise or during hot weather.
Drowsiness/Blurred Vision
Other common side effects may include narcotic effects, such as dizziness, drowsiness and blurred vision. These may impair or inhibit the ability to drive or use machinery. These effects may be worsened by the use of alcohol, sedatives or tranquilizers.
Stomach Problems
Taking oxybutynin may cause problems such as upset stomach, nausea, heartburn, diarrhea and constipation. These side effects may be mild and disappear during treatment. If they persist or worsen a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted.
Other Side Effects
Less common side effects of oxybutynin can include dry mouth, dry eyes, headache and an unusual taste in the mouth.
