How to Clear Blackheads

Blackheads are a form of acne; the pimples have black centers. Although blackheads are associated with dirt, the black center is caused when air comes into contact with the oil in the blocked pore. Blackheads form at the sebaceous gland. The gland produces oil that coats hair as it grows from follicles in the skin. When the oil clogs the pore, a blackhead or whitehead forms. Blackheads are open clogged pores, and they can be treated and prevented using some basic habits and medications.

Step 1

Wash your face two to three times a day with mild soap and warm water. This cleans the excess oils from the skin and stops pores from clogging. It also removes bacterial cells that infect the clogged pores.

Step 2

Use an over-the-counter topical cream or gel containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Rub the cream or gel on your face using a cotton swab in areas where acne has developed. These products dry the oil on your skin, so it does not clog pores.

Step 3

Use a blackhead extractor. A blackhead extractor is an inexpensive way to remove the black portion of the pimple, eliminating the oil that causes acne. Gently press the hole of the extractor on the blackhead to remove the oil. Use the other side of the extractor to scrape the extracted oil contents off the skin.

Step 4

See a doctor about medications that help eliminate acne. A dermatologist can prescribe stronger topical creams or medications such as Retin-A that unclog pores. These medications also help reduce the redness and irritation caused by blackheads.
