How to Relieve Acne Cysts

Acne cysts are a result of the severest forms of acne. Oil and dead skin cells become clogged in the hair follicles, and large cysts form on the surface of the skin. The cysts are typically at least five millimeters or larger. Acne cysts can rupture and cause skin irritation and they are also more prone to infection. It is important to find relief for cystic acne since not treating it can lead to permanent scarring.

Step 1

Wash your face each morning with a mild cleanser. Use lukewarm water and avoid harsh soaps to prevent excessive drying.

Step 2

Use an over-the-counter topical acne treatment. Look for products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to relieve acne cysts. Products include Clean & Clear On the Spot Acne Treatment and Murad Acne Spot Treatment. Apply a thin layer of the cream to the cysts twice a day. If the skin feels irritated, reduce usage to once a day.

Step 3

Visit your doctor. A physician can recommend treatments for the acne cysts. A dermatologist may administer a cortisone shot to the area that you are suffering breakouts. The cortisone shot can eliminate swelling and reduce your risk of infection.

Step 4

Get a prescription for Accutane. Accutane is only recommended for severe cases of cystic acne since it does put you at risk for serious side effects. Potential side effects include severe birth defects, depression, dryness and nosebleeds.

Tips and Warnings

  • To reduce inflammation and control bacteria associated with cystic acne, your doctor may prescribe a course of oral antibiotics.
  • Never pop the acne cysts. You are likely to spread the bacteria to other parts of the skin. You also increase your chances of acne scarring.
