According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), glucose monitoring is important to assist in the management of diabetes and its symptoms and consequences. Monitoring is important in the regulation of food intake, daily physical activity and medication dosage. Diabetics often check glucose rates via a finger prick to obtain a blood sample and use a handheld glucose meter or glucometer to measure glucose levels. Continuous glucose monitoring systems are different in that they measure readings automatically with the placement of a sensor under the skin. Although continuous glucose monitors can be more expensive than handheld glucometers, they can assist in increased control of glucose levels, as they can measure blood glucose rates at 1 to 5 minute intervals. Alarms can be set if the rates are out of range, assisting diabetics to better regulate their blood glucose levels. The Food and Drug Administration has approved a select number of devices for use.
Abbott FreeStyle Navigator
The Abbott FreeStyle Navigator is one of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved continous glucose monitoring devices. It works through placement of a sensor on the upper part of the arm or abdomen. A small filament, about the size of a few strands of hair, is placed under the skin. Its mechanism works by measuring glucose levels between the cells.
Dexcom Seven Plus
The Dexcom Seven Plus is U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved to allow for monitoring and wear for up to 7 days. Glucose levels are updated on the wireless module every 5 minutes. There is also an option to trend and track levels over multiple times throughout the day.
Guardian REAL-Time Continous Glucose Monitoring System
The Guardian by Medtronic is U.S. FDA approved. One of the features of this continuous glucose monitor is that it provides alerts to allow for action prior to glucose levels being reached. It also tracks and trends information similar to the other approved units.
Medtronic MiniMed Paradigm REAL-Time Insulin Pump
The MiniMed Paradigm from Medtronic is an U.S. FDA approved continuous glucose monitor. It includes both an insulin pump and the features of a continuous glucose monitor. This device is beneficial for a diabetic needing both monitoring and insulin.
Physician Approval
Continuous glucose monitors require a prescription and physician approval. Some features may be more appropriate for certain individuals; therefore, all options should be reviewed with a physician prior to selection.
More Information
Currently, the best source to find information regarding continuous glucose monitors is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. As continuous glucose monitors are medical devices, the FDA is responsible for approval.
