How to Cure a Split Nail

If you get split nails, try using a hardening nail polish. To cure a split nail that has already occurred, all it takes is some simple materials that you likely already have around your home. By cutting your nail properly, and then sealing it with a light paper or fabric, your split nail will grow back strong, without the risk of the split becoming worse over time.

Step 1

Douse one or two cotton balls in nail polish remover, and clean the area where the split nail has occurred.

Step 2

Clip the nail as close to the skin as possible. In some cases, this will get rid of the split completely. Use a nail file to smooth out the top of the nail, so there isn't a chance that the nail will snag on anything and become worse.

Step 3

Cut a small piece of coffee filter that will fit over the entire affected nail.

Step 4

Apply a thin layer of clear nail polish to the affected nail. Wait for about 30 seconds, or until the nail polish feels tacky when you touch it with your finger. Press the small piece of coffee filter onto the sticky surface, smoothing out any bumps or air bubbles for a smooth finish.

Step 5

Apply another coat of clear polish over the coffee filter on your nail. Allow it to dry before adding a coat of colored nail polish so that the coffee filter is hidden. Paint the rest of your nails the same color to camouflage the healing split nail.

Step 6

Leave the coffee filter on your nail until the split has grown out long enough that you can clip it away. Soak your nail in nail polish remover for 30 seconds before sliding the coffee filter off of your nail.
