Six-pack abdominals have always been the staple for a "hot" body. Commercials promote weight-loss supplements, programs and equipment to get rid of your fat tummy. But when it comes down to it, the most effective and most healthy way to flatten your stomach and build abs is through diet and exercise. You can't target just one area from which to shed pounds, but when you lose weight and tone your body, stomach fat will come off, too.
Step 1
Commit to an exercise program. Cardiovascular or aerobic exercises like running, walking and swimming are effective ways to burn a lot of calories. The movements in swimming and running also help tone your abdominal muscles. Exercise regularly--three to five days a week for at least 30 minutes--to help lose weight and tone your abs.
Step 2
Exercise your abdominals. It's true that everyone has a set of six-pack abs under a layer of fat, but it's not true that hundreds of crunches will melt away tummy fat. Instead, it is a combination of exercise, ab exercises and diet. Work your abs with crunches and medicine ball exercises to help strengthen your abs and your core.
Step 3
Eat a balanced, healthy diet. Consuming the right foods, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, unsaturated fats, low- or fat-free foods and lean protein will healthily fuel your body. Eating healthy will help you lose weight in conjunction with regular exercise.
Step 4
Relax your body and mind. The hormone cortisol, which is triggered by stress, can relocate stored fat into the abdomen, increasing belly fat. Find healthy ways to reduce stress, like massages, aromatherapy and even exercise.
Tips and Warnings
- Ab exercises may not burn stomach fat, but they do strengthen your core, which is important for good posture and ab and lower-back health.
