Gabapentin Neurotonin Side Effects

Gabapentin (also known as Neurontin) is an anti-seizure medication used to prevent seizures and treat nerve pain associated with shingles and diabetic neuropathy (nerve pain). Scientists do not fully understand how gabapentin works to relieve pain from these conditions, according to Drugs.com. However, it prevents seizures by increasing the amount of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is a natural chemical in the brain that decreases the risk of seizures. As with all medications, you should be aware of the possible side effects of gabapentin.

Nervous System Side Effects

Drugs.com states that clumsiness, vision changes, dizziness and drowsiness are common nervous system side effects of gabapentin. These occur because gabapentin increases the levels of GABA in your brain, which can cause these nervous system side effects. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you. In addition, do not abruptly stop taking gabapentin; this may increase your risk for nervous system side effects. Alert your doctor if these side effects are preventing you from completing your daily activities. He may be able to adjust the dose or switch you to another medication to avoid these effects.

Digestive System Effects

Gabapentin may cause constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, stomach upset or vomiting, according to Drugs.com. Taking an antacid containing aluminum or magnesium within two hours of taking gabapentin can result in an increase of these side effects. Always let your doctor know what other medications you are taking before taking gabapentin.

Musculoskeletal System Side Effects

The Mayo Clinic states that lack or loss of strength; lower back or side pain; trembling or shaking; and swelling of the hands, feet or lower legs are common side effects associated with taking gabapentin. Do not be alarmed by these side effects because they will likely improve as your body adjusts to the medication. Let your doctor know if these effects do not improve.

Other Common Symptoms

Cold or flu-like symptoms, hoarseness, dark urine, irregular heartbeat, itching, clay-colored stools, and blistering or peeling of the skin are side effects of gabapentin, according to the Mayo Clinic. These side effects may be signs of a drug allergy or overdose. However, they may be signs of other serious medical conditions. Immediately alert your doctor if you are experiencing any of these side effects.
