The Best Face Products for Acne

Acne affects most people at some time in their lives. It can appear on the skin as blackheads, papules, pustules and cysts. These skin blemishes are caused by the pores becoming clogged with oils, sebum and bacteria, which inflame the skin and create puss. To treat acne breakouts, there are a few effective facial products that are known to clear skin quickly.

Mid-Strength Benzoyl Peroxide Cream

Benzoyl peroxide cream is a highly effective and easily obtainable acne-fighting product that works to clear acne by releasing oxygen deep into the pores, which kills acne-causing bacteria. When treating acne, avoid using the higher strength benzoyl peroxide cream, namely 10 percent in concentration, which can cause severe side effects from use. These side effects include peeling, redness and chemical burns on the skin. Using the mid-strength benzoyl peroxide cream will clear and dry up acne quickly, while minimizing the chance of experiencing skin reactions. Mid-strength benzoyl peroxide cream, 5 percent in strength, can be purchased at any drug or grocery store. A pea-sized amount should be spread gently over the affected area until it has been absorbed; use twice daily. Avoid applying benzoyl peroxide to areas that are more delicate or not affected by acne, as it can be irritating and can cause redness on the skin if used in excess.

Retinoid Cream

Retinoid creams are created from a form of vitamin A, which works to clear acne by increasing the rate at which the skin cells turnover. The dead skin cells, which could normally become trapped down into the pores, will be able to slough off more quickly, while the new skin cells will be encouraged to develop faster. This effectively prevents the pores from remaining or becoming clogged. Retinoid creams can cause severe skin reactions if used too frequently or in a concentration that is too high. For this reason, retinoid creams are only available by prescription and monitored by a licensed dermatologist.

Tea Tree Oil

The Department of Dermatology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital suggests that tea tree oil can clear up acne eruptions just as effectively as benzoyl peroxide cream, but will not cause side effects like redness, itching, peeling or burning on the skin. Tea tree oil is available at most health food stores or can be purchased through an online merchant. Tea tree oil is extracted and bottled in its full strength and must be diluted before using it on the skin into a 95/5 concentration; 95 percent water and 5 percent tea tree oil. To do this, fill a bottle with 8 oz. of water and add five drops of tea tree oil; apply to the skin up to three times per day.
