The neem tree grows mainly in India and Asia and has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. According to the Neem Foundation, the bark from the tree contains nimibidin, which is antipyretic (temperature reducing), antibacterial, anti-ulcer, analgesic, antifungal and non-irrititating. Thus the bark has many beneficial uses. The bark can be freeze-dried or ground into powder for easier use.
Skin
Because neem bark contains nimibidin, it is useful in treating many different skin conditions. According to the Neem Foundation, neem bark is used to treat dandruff, warts, herpes labialis, scabies and dermatitis. It can also successfully treat mild burns and infections that occur on the skin. Some people use neem for acne (especially acne that has become infected) because it can disinfect and kill bacteria. Many people who like to use more holistic methods to treat minor skin problems turn to neem bark as an alternative treatment.
Stomach
The University of Michigan Health System's website says freeze-dried neem bark can be very beneficial in treating stomach ulcers. The recommended dosage is about 30 to 60 mg twice a day. Although neem oil can cause some stomach upset, neem bark has an opposite effect on the gastrointestinal tract. Neem bark can help treat gastrointestinal upsets such as diarrhea, intestinal infections and nausea, says the University of Michigan Health System.
Insect Repellant
According to the University of Wisconsin Colleges, neem bark can be very useful in repelling insects, including those that bite, such as mosquitoes, ticks or fleas, and stinging insects like bees and wasps. For use as a repellent, the bark is usually ground into a fine powder and brushed on the skin. The powder can be safely used on animals or pets. In addition, it can be used in homes to keep the environment insect free.
