Ingrown hairs on the neck can be painful and aggravating if left untreated. Ingrown hairs are caused when the hair growing from the follicle grows at an angle and cannot break through the opening in the follicle. The follicle will also become blocked with sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria. This will cause pus to fill the follicle and it will swell. Early treatment of ingrown hairs on the neck can decrease the risk of scarring and further infection.
Step 1
Pry the hair out with a sterilized needle or sharp tweezers. If you can see the ingrown hair, then it is close to the surface and prying the end out of the skin can unblock the follicle and relieve pressure and swelling. The ideal time to do this is after a warm shower when the pores are opened on the face and neck.
Step 2
Shave daily with a rich shaving cream and sharp razor. Shave the neck hairs with the direction they grow in naturally, to train them to grow up instead of at an angle. This will also coax an existent ingrown hair out into the open for shaving or tweezing. Use care when shaving over the ingrown hair.
Step 3
Exfoliate the neck daily to unclog the hair follicle. A gentle exfoliating cleanser will rid the ingrown hair follicle of trapped skin cells, sebum and bacteria, preventing further infection.
Step 4
Apply a warm, moist cloth or compress to the ingrown hair. This will bring the hair and blockage up to the surface of the skin and the hair will break through, releasing any infection and trapped sebum, bacteria and skin cells.
Step 5
Apply tea tree oil with a cotton swab the the affected area. Tea tree oil is a natural astringent and will reduce pain, swelling, and release infection. Place a couple drops of tea tree oil on your cotton swab and apply the the ingrown neck hair daily until infection is gone.
