How to Strengthen Weak Nails

Weak nails can be a hassle with constant breaking and splitting due to weakness. Everyday tasks, such as washing dishes, showering, and folding laundry, can pose a problem when the constant risk of nail breakage and possible cuticle damage is present. Hardening weak nails may be as simple as making small changes to your daily diet or purchasing over-the-counter products to repair damage and strengthen the nails.

Step 1

Moisturize your nails after bathing. Soak your nails in warm water for 15 minutes. For added moisture, include bath oils in the water. Dry your hands and apply a moisturizing lotion or cream to the nail surface and cuticle area. Moisture protects the nail and helps heal damage done as a result of weakness.

Step 2

Take biotin supplements daily. According the the Mayo Clinic, taking 2.5mg of biotin daily may increase the thickness of nails.

Step 3

Trim and file your nails to a square shape once a week. Shorter nails are more difficult to break and tear when nails are weak. This will help your nails to strengthen without further damage.

Step 4

Apply a coat of clear nail polish weekly. The polish will protect the nail and help keep them moisturized. Use a non-acetone polish remover after seven days and reapply clear nail polish.

Step 5

Mix finely ground eggshell into vitamin enriched juices. According to Mikhail Tombak, Ph.D, eggshell therapy strengthens nails. Steep the eggshell in boiling water for five minutes, then grind in a coffee grinder until it is a fine powder. Mix with carrot, cucumber or green pepper juice. These juices contain vitamins and minerals for hair, nail and bone health, such as vitamins B, A, C, D and minerals potassium, zinc and silicone.

Step 6

Apply nail hardener to the nails daily. The Mayo Clinic recommends avoiding hardeners that contain toluene sulfonamide or formaldehyde, as these can irritate skin and worsen the condition.
