Products to Cover Thinning Hair

Hair thins for a variety of reasons, including hormone imbalances, stress and aging, reports hair loss expert Dr. Alan J. Bauman. Bauman says that some 60 million Americans are affected by hair loss and have a variety of treatments from which to choose. While some people will lose hair follicles as a result of aging, everyone's hair thins, according to dermatologist Zoe Draelos of Wake Forest University School of Medicine. As people age, the hair shaft shrinks, she says, and that means even the thickest head of hair will look thinner later in life.

Hair Thickeners

Hair thickeners to not regrow hair. They are applied to the hair and either adhere to the existing hair shaft or create a chemical reaction to make the hair shaft swell with trapped moisture so it appears thicker. Hair thickeners are a cosmetic solution to the problem of thinning hair and will need to be applied regularly to maintain their effect.

Concealers

Concealers are a type of makeup that is used to color the scalp the same color as your hair to mask the thinning. Some of them, such as Dermmatch, also coat the hair shaft to add thickness. Concealers work best when there is some hair on the scalp. It is not an option for people who have large bald spots. You'll need to reapply after shampooing your hair, but concealers can usually withstand swimming and showering.

Spray-On Hair

Spray-on hair is a paint-type product that both colors the scalp and adds fiber to the existing hair. Stop Hair Loss Now suggests having someone else apply the spray for an accurate application, especially for bald spots at the crown of the head. This preparation can be used on larger bald spots because it creates the appearance of hair. While easy and quick to apply, spray-on hair can flake or wash off in water, including a rainstorm.
