How to Make Homemade Acne Products

Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that is characterized by the appearance of pustules, blackheads, nodules, and cysts on the skin. While there are many over-the-counter acne products on the market, these products often contain harsh chemicals that can cause irritation. Fortunately, it is possible to create your own homemade acne products that can clear and eliminate acne breakouts without irritating or inflaming the skin.

Step 1

Make a homemade acne scrub. In a small bowl, combine 1 tbsp. of baking soda, 1 tbsp. of raw oats, 1 tsp. of olive oil and 2 tbsp. of honey, mixing them together well. Apply the facial scrub to your face, gently moving your fingers in circular motions. Avoid scrubbing the skin too vigorously, which can cause irritation. After three minutes, rinse off your skin with water. A natural facial scrub can be used twice a week.

Step 2

Make a homemade acne toner. Pour 4 oz. of concentrated lemon juice into an empty bottle, and mix 1 tbsp. of aloe vera gel into it. Soak a cotton pad in the natural toner, and apply it gently to your skin. Allow your skin to dry completely, and repeat up to three times a day. Refrigerate unused toner in the refrigerater for up to three weeks.

Step 3

Make a homemade acne mask. In a small bowl, mix together 1 tbsp. of French green clay and 2 drops of tea tree oil. Spread the tea tree oil mask onto your skin, allowing it to remain there until it dries, which typically takes about five minutes. Rinse off the mask using warm water, and repeat once per week.

Tips and Warnings

  • Helpful information: Oatmeal is high in vitamin E, as well as mildly abrasive, which enables it to buff away dead skin cells without damaging the skin. Lemon juice is high in vitamin C, which works on the skin to increase the speed at which dead skin cells are sloughed off, while encouraging the skin to develop new skin cells more rapidly. This helps keep the pores clearer and the skin more evenly toned. Tea tree oil is an antibacterial and antimicrobial oil that kills off acne-causing bacteria as well as benzoyl peroxide cream, but without irritating the skin and causing side effects such as redness or peeling.
