How to Stop Smelly Feet

Foot odor can affect anyone at any time. It can be the result of poor hygiene, infection or simply due to a lack of air flow to the feet. Persistent foot odor that is accompanied by other symptoms, like itching, skin peeling or redness, can indicate an infection. Treating smelly feet requires a few simple changes to your daily routine.

Step 1

Wash your feet with bar soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly. Repeat this at least once per day, regardless of if this is during your regular shower or bath. Washing your feet after a day of shoe-wearing or after a workout can help wash away odor caused by bacteria and sweat. Rinse and dry your feet thoroughly.

Step 2

Prepare a small tub for your feet by mixing 1 Tbsp. of baking soda with 1 quart of warm water. Soak your feet for 15 minutes twice per week. The soda helps cut down the amount of odor produced, according to MotherNature.com. Rinse and dry your feet thoroughly.

Step 3

Spray your feet with a commercial foot powder or sprinkle with cornstarch before putting on socks.

Step 4

Wear cotton or wool socks, as they are better at keeping moisture at bay. Keeping your feet dry is important in minimizing odor production caused by sweat.

Step 5

Change your socks mid-day if possible. If you find that your socks are wet, then the odor is likely due to excessive sweating. Try wearing two pairs of socks to help wick away the moisture. Opt for breathable shoes as often as possible. Go barefoot when you can or wear sandals.

Tips and Warnings

  • Try an anti-fungal cream or foot spray if your foot odor does not diminish after soaking several times and using drying agents. Purchase shoes that are breathable when possible. Try alternating shoes every other day to allow them to dry fully before wear. Place baking soda in your shoes overnight to absorb any odor or moisture left behind.
