German measles, also known as rubella or "three-day measles," is a viral infection that can be spread through coughing or sneezing. It usually begins with a rash before it becomes a more severe respiratory infection. Symptoms of rubella include joint pain, conjunctivitis (inflammation around the eye), mild itching and inflammation of the testes. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, nutritional steps can help prevent or reduce these symptoms.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are valuable sources of nutrients, including antioxidants, which support a healthy immune system. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests a diet lush in antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables as a means of protecting the body against the viral infection aspect of rubella. Blueberries, strawberries, cherries, oranges, tomatoes, broccoli, carrots, spinach, kale, apples and pears are all antioxidant-rich foods. Seek a variety of fresh, colorful fruits and vegetables on a consistent basis, as those deepest in color tend to carry the most antioxidant benefits. The Harvard School of Public Health recommends at least 4 1/2 cups, or 9 servings, of fruits and vegetables per day for optimum health.
Whole Grains
Whole grains such as oats, barley, rye, whole wheat and spelt are grains that have not been processed or stripped of vital nutrients. According to the American Heart Association, whole grains are rich in B-vitamins, iron and dietary fiber, which are nutrients that reduce risk of viral or infectious diseases such as rubella. Replace sugary cereals, enriched white or wheat breads, enriched pasta and instant rice with whole-grain equivalents. Incorporating whole grains into your daily diet can help protect your body from acquiring rubella.
Healthy Fats
Unsaturated, plant-based fats are nutritious fats that support physical health. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests plant-based oils, such as olive or vegetable oil, can reduce or prevent rubella symptoms, including inflammation and joint pain. Olive oil, canola oil, flax seeds, flax-seed oil, nuts, fatty fish and avocados are valuable sources of healthy fats that support wellness. Because fat aids in nutrient absorption, a modest amount of healthy fat served with nutritious meals and snacks will provide many nutritional benefits, such as a further strengthened immune system that can ward off the rubella virus.
