How to Tell Your BMI

Deciding whether or not you are at a healthy weight can be difficult. BMI, body mass index, is a number used to give an estimation body fat and disease risk. The number is calculated by using height and weight, and the indexes are the same for men and women. Health professionals use BMI calculations to determine weight ranges that put individuals at risk for disease.

Step 1

Step on a scale to measure your weight in pounds.

Step 2

Measure your height in centimeters.

Step 3

Convert your weight in pounds to kilograms. Divide your weight in pounds by 2.2. Example: 160 lbs. / 2.2 = 72kg.

Step 4

Convert your height in centimeters to meters. Divide your height in centimeters by 100. Example: 165cm / 100 = 1.65m.

Step 5

Calculate your BMI by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared. Example: 72 / (1.65 x 1.65) = 26.4

Step 6

Determine your weight range based on BMI categories (see Resources).
