The Best Oils for Acne

Acne outbreaks can be from food allergies, contact dermatitis or allergic reactions to artificial fragrances used in skin care products. Alcohol-based products can dry out oily skin, prompting it to produce more oil as a rebound effect. Using essential oils neat or diluted in carrier oils such as jojoba or sweet almond oil can help clear acne. Some oils will calm hypersensitive skin, others are astringent and can balance oil production to reduce acne.

Sweet Almond, Lavender Oil

Use gentle essential oils such as lavender and helichrysum, blended into sweet almond or jojoba oil as a facial cleanser. Dabbing on clean cotton balls, or pouring into your palm, smooth over the face and neck. Avoid rubbing skin. Instead, lightly move across skin. Rinse off with warm water.

Treat Acne with Tea Tree Oil

Dry out acne by applying tea tree oil directly with a cotton swab, being careful not to press or push on the skin. Lightly coat pimples, whiteheads and blackheads several times a day. This is best done right after cleansing the face but can be done throughout the day. Tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) has antibacterial and antifungal qualities, according to the National Institutes of Health and is already in many skin care products.

Use Clary Sage to Balance Oil Production

Prevent future breakouts by moisturizing skin with essential oils that will not irritate or clog pores. Combine in a dark-colored glass container about three ounces of jojoba or sweet almond oil with 20 to 25 drops of tea tree, clary sage (Salvia sclarea) and lavender essential oils. Use this diluted oil as a face moisturizer. Apply to clean skin sparingly.
