Pimples appear on the skin due to the pores becoming clogged with oil and dirt or infected. Different factors can cause pimples to appear, including exposure to dirt and oil, stress, hormone changes and certain medications. If a single pimple erupts on your skin, you may feel tempted to pop it. But you should resist that urge, because this can increase the likelihood of acne scarring and spreading the infection to other areas of the skin. There are better ways to get rid of a pimple.
Step 1
Wash the skin with a mild cleanser. Get rid of excess dirt and oil by cleansing with a mild face wash and lukewarm water once in the morning and once in the evening. One example of a cleanser is Lather Ultra Mild Face Wash.
Step 2
Use an acne-fighting topical solution with benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is available in pads, gels and lotions. Look for products with a 5 percent concentration and apply the solution to the areas where you are experiencing breakouts. Some brand examples are Obagi Therapeutic Lotion and Jan Marini Benzoyl Peroxide 5 percent.
Step 3
Apply an oil-free moisturizer to the skin. Acne treatments can dry out and irritate the skin. Prevent this from occurring by using a moisturizer before putting on any makeup.
Step 4
Treat the pimple with a spot cream containing sulfur each evening. After removing your makeup and washing your face, use a small amount of sulfur cream on the pimple. Products you can try include MD Skincare Correct & Perfect Spot Treatment and Murad Acne Spot Treatment.
Tips and Warnings
- If the pimple becomes large or infected, contact your doctor to go over treatment options. For example, he may prescribe antibiotics or give you cortisone injections to reduce inflammation and redness. You can use concealer makeup while you are treating the pimple as long as it does not contain oil.
