The prostate gland is responsible for making up the components of semen. Sometimes, the prostate gland becomes infected, resulting in a medical condition called prostatitis. The Mayo Clinic says symptoms of prostatitis include pain with urination, difficulty urinating and stomach, groin or lower back pain. Prostatitis also causes painful ejaculation and pain in the testes or penis. Fortunately, this medical problem can be treated with various medications.
Levofloxacin
Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic medications, such as levofloxacin. According to Drugs.com, levofloxacin works to eliminate bacteria in the body. It also treats infections of the skin, sinuses, bladder and kidneys. Levofloxacin can also treat pneumonia, bronchitis and anthrax-related exposure.
Drugs.com says levofloxacin's side effects include muscle pain, headache, restlessness, anxiousness and depression. Diarrhea, nausea, constipation, trouble sleeping and itching of the skin are some of levofloxacin's other side effects. Also, levofloxacin can lead to seizures, yellowing of the skin, easy bleeding or bruising, joint pain and bloody or watery diarrhea, says Drugs.com.
Use caution when taking levofloxacin if you are suffering from joint problems, kidney or liver disease, seizure disorders or low potassium levels. Levofloxacin may worsen these symptoms.
Doxazosin
Doxazosin is an alpha-blocker medication that works to relax the bladder and prostate muscles. This drug may make urination less painful, says the Mayo Clinic. Doxazosin can also treat high blood pressure because it also relaxes the muscles in the blood vessels, says MedlinePlus.
Doxazosin's side effects include headache, fatigue, weight gain, shortness of breath, a runny nose and muscle or joint pain. Chest pain, swelling of the hands or feet, a painful and prolonged erection and a rapid or irregular heartbeat are doxazosin's other side effects, says MedlinePlus.
Taking doxazosin with such medicines as ketoconazole, ipatropium, indinavir or saquinavir may require alterations in doxazosin's dose.
Aspirin
Aspirin can also help relieve prostatitis. According to MedlinePlus, aspirin belongs to the salicylate group of medications that block the substances in the body that promote pain, fever and inflammation. Aspirin can also treat the pain and inflammation of osteo- or rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
Aspirin's side effects include heartburn, black or bloody stools, hearing loss, a fast heartbeat, stomach pain, vomiting and nausea. Bloody vomit, hoarseness and cold or clammy skin are aspirin's other side effects, says MedlinePlus.
MedlinePlus says that aspirin's dose may need changes, especially when taking benazepril, fosinopril, heparin, warfarin or probenacid.
