According to the National Institutes of Health, cellulite is simply fat that has bulged around collagen, causing a dimpled appearance to the skin. It most commonly develops along the back of the thighs, but other areas of the body are also prone to this condition, such as the buttock and hips. Surgery is not actually an option for the treatment of cellulite; you'll need to use other methods for removing this type of fat.
Step 1
Lose excess pounds. Though the National Institutes of Health claim no amount of weight loss can improve the appearance of cellulite, experts at the Mayo Clinic recommend losing excess pounds. It can help to reduce the signs of cellulite.
Step 2
Start an exercise program. Experts at the Mayo Clinic also recommend exercise to improve the appearance of cellulite. Exercises that tone and strengthen the legs and buttock are the best. Stick with walking, biking, jogging, swimming and weight resistance.
Step 3
Try laser therapy. For cellulite treatment, laser energy is coupled with deep tissue massage to improve the appearance of cellulite, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, it is most effective with twice-a-week sessions, and the results are temporary.
Step 4
Talk to a dermatologist about radiofrequency therapy. Similar to laser therapy, deep tissue massage is used in conjunction with radiofrequency sessions to improve the appearance of cellulite. According to the Mayo Clinic, the results are also temporary, lasting upwards of six months.
Step 5
Consider vigorous massage. This is more so an alternative form of treating cellulite, as it hasn't been scientifically proven to work. But even the Mayo Clinic states that you can see a slight improvement in cellulite from what is also known as lipomassage.
