It's completely normal for both men and women to have facial hair. Some women may notice thicker, darker hair on their upper lip, beneath the chin and around the eyebrows. In the journal "American Family Physician," it is reported that unwanted facial hair can be caused by certain medications, genetics and some medical conditions. If you begin noticing more hair appearing on your face, you should rule out a medical condition with your doctor. But no matter what causes the hair to grow, there are ways to remove it.
Tweeze
Step 1
Tweeze the hairs. Use a good pair of tweezers like those sold by the company Tweezerman. A decent pair of tweezers will be sharp and feature a slanted tip. There should also be adequate pressure when the two ends are closed.
Step 2
Trim the hairs you're about to pluck. Short hairs are easier to grip with tweezers and it will better define the hair follicles you want to eliminate.
Step 3
Apply a hot, moist compress to the area you are preparing to tweeze. This will open the pores, relax the hair follicle and ease the sting of plucking the hair.
Step 4
Grab the hair with the tweezers as close to the skin you can get. This will lessen the chance of breaking the hair and having to pluck twice.
Step 5
Pluck each hair in the same direction in which it is growing. Plucking against the growth of the hair can pinch more and increase the size of the pore.
Step 6
Apply a soothing cream or moisturizer to your skin after tweezing. It helps reduce inflammation and soreness.
Wax
Step 1
Wash your face to remove all makeup, dirt and oils. Pull back the hair you do not want waxed with a bobby pin or barrette. This step applies if you're waxing hair around your ears and eyebrows.
Step 2
Lightly powder the area you are going to wax. This step prevents that the wax from sticking to the skin. You can use baby powder or cornstarch if your home wax kit does not provide powder.
Step 3
Spread the wax evenly onto the prepared patch of skin. Always apply the wax in the same direction that the hair grows.
Step 4
Apply the wax strip in the direction of hair growth. Pat lightly so the strip bonds with the wax. Allow it to sit for a few moments so the wax can cool.
Step 5
Yank the strip off in the opposite direction of hair growth. Press your hand to the area as soon as the wax comes off--this helps ease pain. You can reuse the same strip to get the few lingering hairs that were missed.
Tips and Warnings
- Electrolysis, a pricey procedure, is the only method of permanent hair removal.
- Do not moisturize your face before tweezing and waxing. It can cause the tweezers to slip and may prevent the wax from adhering to the hairs.
