A TENS unit, or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator, is a device that emits low levels of electric current to the nerves in the body. These nerves are connected to the muscles, causing muscle contraction when the current is introduced. The electric currents are administered via small electrodes placed at various locations on the body. These units are used primarily for rehabilitation due to nerve or muscular injury. However, some bodybuilders and health enthusiasts are now using them to build muscle once the bulking benefits of using a TENS unit were discovered.

Step 1

Cleanse the area where your electrodes will be placed. Make sure that you cleanse thoroughly to remove any bacteria to decrease risk of irritation and infection. Also make sure you dry the area well after cleansing.

Step 2

Apply a small dab of electrode gel to the surface of the electrode pad. The gel acts as protection against electrical burn to the skin and also helps stimulate the muscles.

Step 3

Apply electrodes starting in the center of the area you are working. Apply electrodes outward from your central placement. This will ensure stimulation to the proper muscles.

Step 4

Adjust the intensity level of the TENS unit. When starting, use a low setting and work your way to higher intensity with repeated use. Too high of a setting can cause muscle weakness and fatigue, so working your intensity levels up slowly will prevent this from occurring.

Step 5

Use the TENS for up to 30 minutes unless otherwise directed by your physician. TENS units are safe enough to wear up to 24 hours on low intensity.

Step 6

Remove the electrodes by pulling along with hair growth. This will keep you from injuring the skin and pulling hair out unnecessarily.
