Any area of the body that is shaved can be prone to developing ingrown hair. Since the armpits fall into this category, you may find ingrown hairs in this area. Ingrown hairs occur when, after the hair has been removed, it grows back into the follicle instead of growing outward. Symptoms of ingrown hairs include redness, irritation and swelling. Prior to hair removal, you can take some steps to prevent ingrown hairs from occurring in the underarm area.
Step 1
Wait until the hair is long. Before you shave your armpits, allow the hair to grow out to prevent ingrown hairs. Hair should be at least a quarter of an inch long before you shave it.
Step 2
Allow the pores to open up. Soften the skin and open the pores by shaving the armpits during a hot shower.
Step 3
Use a glycerin-based shaving lotion. This moisturizes the area and will not clog the pores. Avoid products that contain benzocaine or menthol.
Step 4
Purchase a new shaver. Avoid shaving the armpits with an old blade. Change the blade of your shaver on a regular basis to prevent ingrown hair. If you use disposable razors, make sure you only use them a couple of times before getting a new one.
Step 5
Run the razor over the area once. Do not use the razor to continuously shave the area, and always move the razor in the same direction as the armpit hair’s natural growth pattern. Lightly run the razor over the skin to remove the hair without applying pressure to the area. Once the hair is removed, rinse away any residue with lukewarm or cool water.
Step 6
Dry off the armpits after you have exited the shower. Slather on a moisturizing lotion on all areas that you have shaved, including the underarm area.
