Products to Help Hair Grow

Hair loss affects both men and women. The Mayo Clinic lists a number of causes, including genes, disease, poor nutrition, medical treatments and scalp infection. There are a number of products on the market that slow hair loss and promote the growth of new hair. These are available both over-the-counter and by prescription, and come in the form of gels, foams and pills.

Minoxidil

This over-the-counter hair growth agent is commonly known as Rogaine. Available in solutions of 2 or 5 percent, this foam or cream is applied to the scalp twice a day. The Mayo Clinic states that the product promotes new hair growth in addition to preventing further hair loss. Hair growth is usually seen about six weeks after regular use. If use of the product is discontinued, then the new hair growth quickly stops.

Finasteride

This prescription drug is known as Propecia. A pill is ingested daily to prevent hair loss and promote new hair growth. The Mayo Clinic states that the drug works by disrupting a hormone that shrinks the hair follicles and causes hair loss. Those taking Propecia can expect positive results after a few months of regular use.

Anthralin

This tarry ointment is applied to the scalp and washed off once a day. It is commonly known as Dithro-Scalp and, although it is commonly prescribed by doctors to treat dry skin or psoriasis, it has been shown to promote new hair growth. Hair growth should start after 12 or more weeks of regular usage.
