Allergy Medication List

Watery eyes, sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy skin and chest tightness indicate more than just a minor irritation as these symptoms can signal the onset of an allergy. According to the Mayo Clinic, allergies affect the skin, airways and digestive tract. An anaphylactic reaction, a condition characterized by trouble breathing, hives and facial, tongue or throat swelling, can occur if severe allergies go untreated.

Brompheniramine

Brompheniramine is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs called antihistamine medications. It works to block the action of histamine, so that the typical allergy symptoms (coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes and runny nose) do not occur.
Drugs.com says that brompheniramine's side effects include fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth and a headache. It can also cause trouble urinating, difficulty sleeping and increase the chances for developing a enlarged prostate. Signs of an allergic reaction to brompheniramine include trouble breathing, hives and tongue or facial swelling.
Taking brompheniramine while having asthma, a stomach ulcer, bladder problems, an enlarged prostate, heart problems, an overactive thyroid gland or glaucoma may require changes in brompheniramine's dose. Sometimes, brompheniramine cannot be taken as it may worsen these conditions.
The regular and liquid tablet is typically taken every four to six hours as needed, according to Drugs.com. The extended-release capsule is taken every 8 to 12 hours as needed.

Prednisone

Prednisone is a corticosteroid drug used to treat severe allergic reactions, and it is designed to decrease redness and inflammation. MedlinePlus says that prednisone also treats arthritis, lupus (condition in which the body attacks the organs) and multiple sclerosis, a condition in which the nerves no longer work properly.
Prednisone's side effects include dizziness, headache, drowsiness, acne, muscle weakness, increased hair growth, heartburn and sweating. Prednisone also causes trouble sleeping, personality changes, fatigue and bulging eyes. Seizures, confusion, vomiting, trouble breathing, swallowing, an irregular heartbeat and muscle twitching are just some of prednisone's side effects.
Prednisone can be taken as a liquid or tablet four times a day or every other day.

Monteleukast

Monteleukast is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs called leukotriene inhibitors. According to Drugs.com, leukotrienes are chemicals in the body that lead to lung swelling and constriction of the airways. This medication can be used to treat allergic rhinitis (a type of allergy) and prevent asthma attacks or bronchospasms.
Drugs.com says that side effects of monteleukast include a headache, stomach pain, a fever, stuffy nose, hoarseness and a cough. It can also lead to tooth pain, a skin rash and a sore throat. Monteleukast's more serious effects include tremors, shaking, sinus pain, depression and suicidal thinking.
Drugs.com says that the typical monteleukast dose to treat allergy symptoms is 10mg orally (by mouth) each day.
