Motivation is a key component of every action you do every day. Even the simplest of tasks, such as getting the paper, doing laundry or filling your tank with gas require motivation. When it comes to losing weight, finding the motivation to start and stay the course is not always easy. It takes work and you have to be disciplined. If you are currently struggling with your weight, there are several steps you can take to get motivated.

Step 1

Write down your goals in a journal. If you try to lose weight, but don't have a solid game plan, you can end up falling off the wagon. Jot down five or six personal goals and be as specific possible. For example, you want to lose 30 lbs. in six months; you want to fit into a smaller size outfit; or you want to able to walk up a stairway without being winded. Keep this journal with you through the months and keep logging your progress. Write down things like your weight, your measurements and your resting heart rate.

Step 2

Team up with a reliable training partner to exercise with. Use each other to maintain your individual motivation. Set aside specific daily time slots to train with him and honor these appointments just like you would with business meetings.

Step 3

Cut off ties with anyone who is negative and can bring you down. This includes all the people who are negative, who constantly tell you that you can't lose weight and people that do not lead a healthy lifestyle.

Step 4

Surround yourself with people that are motivated themselves. Announce to everyone you know that you are trying to lose weight. Tell your friends, family members and co-workers. Make sure these people are positive thinkers and live a healthy lifestyle themselves. You will then feel compelled to stay on track.

Step 5

Pin up a picture of someone that you want to look like. Put it in a place where you can constantly see it. Commit that type of body to memory and act as if you already have it. See yourself in great shape, act like you are in great shape and feel like you are in great shape.

Step 6

Enter a competition that will take place several months down the road. This can be a bike race, a 5K run, a walking event or a half marathon. Fill out the entry form, send it in and train for it.

Step 7

Buy a package of training sessions from a personal trainer. Sometimes a gym membership is not enough to get you to continually exercise. But if you drop a few hundred bucks on twice weekly training sessions, you will feel more compelled to get your money's worth.
