How to Remove Facial Hair for Women

Facial hair can be embarrassing and uncomfortable for women, which is probably the reason the modern world has developed so many different ways to get rid of it. In most cases, it's fairly easy to get rid of unwanted facial hair in the comfort of your own bathroom, though none of the do-it-yourself remedies deliver permanent results. If you want to splurge on permanent hair removal, you don't have to worry about regrowth.

Quick Fix

Step 1

Remove any makeup and use a gentle cleanser to prepare the area where you want to remove hair.

Step 2

Use a gentle exfoliating scrub designed for facial use after your skin is clean, to help prevent ingrown hairs from appearing after you remove the hair. Wait at least an hour after exfoliating to remove hair since exfoliation makes the surface of your skin more sensitive to pain.

Step 3

Use tweezers to get rid of a few stray hairs: Grip tweezers firmly and pluck the unwanted hair straight out of your skin. Plucking can be a little painful, so pull the hair completely out on your first tug or you'll prolong the discomfort.

Step 4

Apply warm wax or a depilatory cream to get rid of a patch of hair. Do a patch test on your arm or leg with the removal product you want to use to make sure you're not allergic or sensitive. Apply the product generously, following the instructions on the package. Pull or wipe away the product after the time limit ends. Follow up with a light moisturizer to condition and protect skin.

Permanent Solution

Step 1

Schedule a series of appointments with a trained, certified electrolysis technician. You'll need six to 12 electrolysis sessions, which can take as long as a year to complete, according to Marie Claire magazine, so don't expect instant results.

Step 2

Prep for your appointment by making sure your skin is clean and free of makeup. If your electrolysis provider gives you other instructions, be sure to follow them.

Step 3

Follow up with application of anti-inflammatory cream if you're in pain after your treatment. Ask your electrolysis provider for a recommendation or look for a 2-percent hydrocortisone cream.
