People suffer from dandruff for a variety of reasons, and more men than women have dandruff. Causes include genetics, food allergies, medications, excessive sweating, yeast infections and even stress. No matter what the reason, there are usually ways of eliminating or controlling dandruff.
Antifungal Shampoos
Shampoos containing zinc pyrithione have antibacterial and antifungal properties to reduce fungus on the scalp that promotes dandruff. Ketoconazole is another antifungal ingredient in some dandruff shampoos.
Slowing Cell Process
Some shampoos slow the skin cells from dying and flaking off, which causes too much dandruff. Coal tar ingredients in shampoos slow the skin cell process. Shampoos containing selenium sulfide work the same way, but may discolor blond or gray hair. They should be used as directed and followed by rinsing the hair thoroughly, the Mayo Clinic says. Shampoos with salicylic acid help eliminate the flaky skin, but may also give you a dry scalp. This may lead to more flaking. The dryness can be avoided by using a conditioner after shampooing.
Alternatives
Tea tree oil has long been used for its antifungal, antibiotic and antiseptic properties, according to Medical News Today. Some shampoo manufacturers use tea tree oil as an ingredient in their products. The oil comes from the Australian tea tree, but some people may be allergic to it. Green tea may also be used to treat dandruff. A study by Medical College of Georgia researchers, published in the Aug. 18, 2007, issue of "Experimental Dermatology," showed that animals treated with green tea had slower growth of skin cells.
Usage
The Mayo Clinic advises leaving any shampoo on for at least five minutes to let the ingredients seep in and work. Use one shampoo daily until the dandruff has disappeared. Cut back to two or three times a week and see how it works. Sometimes a shampoo may work for a while, but not work as well after a time. It might be a good idea to alternate between shampoos that work on dandruff. In addition to shampoos and alternative measures, always brush your hair with a natural bristle brush. Use firm strokes to move oils and dead skin cells from the scalp outward. Also, try to avoid using mousse, gel and hair spray. If you just can't find anything that does the trick, see your doctor. There are prescription solutions that help eliminate severe dandruff problems.
