How to Use Lemon Juice to Stop Zit Redness

Anyone who has had a big, red zit crop up on the eve of a special event knows how frustrating and embarrassing acne can be. Attempts to mask the red splotches rarely work out. But among the things you can do to combat zit redness involves using lemon juice. This liquid has many uses, but when it comes to zits and acne, it can suck the redness and swelling right out of your skin.

Step 1

Squeeze lemon juice from a halved lemon into a bowl. You can either use the lemon juice on its own or mix it with honey to reduce the acidity. Using honey is a common approach by people who find the acidity of lemon juice to be too strong.

Step 2

Dip a cotton swab into the mixture and apply it to any and all red zits on your skin. This may sting a little, particularly if the zits are open, but the stinging means the acid in the lemon juice is having an effect on your skin.

Step 3

Leave the mixture there for at least 30 minutes before washing off. If you have applied only lemon juice, you can let it dry into your skin.

Step 4

Repeat this process every day to reduce redness over time. Applying lemon juice to the skin will only produce minor effects in the short term, but if you suffer from chronic redness, this procedure can yield a significant improvement over a couple weeks.

Things You'll Need

  • Lemon juice (from fresh lemon if possible)
  • Cotton swab
  • Honey (optional)
