How to Use a Fisher & Paykel CPAP Machine

CPAP machines are used to treat obstructive sleep apnea. When patients with obstructive sleep apnea fall asleep, parts of the airway droop, causing the airway to become blocked. This forces the patient to wake up slightly, making a full night of sleep difficult. Fisher & Paykel CPAP machines work by pumping a gentle flow of air through the patient's respiratory system which helps keep the airway open. Fisher and Paykel make many different CPAP models but based on their user manuals they all can be set up using the same steps.

Step 1

Place the CPAP on a firm base that is lower than your pillow (such as the floor near your bed). According to the manufacturer's instructions, it is important to have the machine on a firm base (to give it stability) and to have it below head-level.

Step 2

Take the plastic tube that came with the device and plug the end with the white plastic connector into the device's outlet valve.

Step 3

Take the other end of the tube and connect it to the mask portion of the CPAP machine.

Step 4

Plus the power cord into both a wall socket and the back of the CPAP motor.

Step 5

Turn the device on by pressing the on/off button on the top of the display.
